 "Unconventional Portraits"
David Cooke and Susanne Dotson have entitled their latest show in our Main Hall Gallery: "Unconventional Portraits". Both artists are doing what they call portraits, but they are not the conventional "head shots". Rather, David is painting portraits of people who have had an influence on his life by using symbolism and story telling. Susanne, staying with her "farm and fashion" motif, has been painting an amazing series of one-foot square canvases that are of designer shoes and boots. Each "shoe portrait" has a story behind it and the titles are as whimsical as the art itself. Both artists, as members of Color Marketing Group (CMG), the international organization that does color forecasting, are interested in the effect of color in their painting. This show will definitely be about color, so as you visit this exhibit at the Cultural Arts Center, expect a riot of color in our gallery for the month of July!

David Cooke explores the juxtaposing of familiar shapes in primarily paint media. As described by Helen Cullinan, art critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "Cooke does wildly colorful and sharply defined acrylic-on-canvas..." Prior to this show, Cooke was exploring farm architecture as a metaphor for urban landscapes by using 44" square canvas that were inspired by Polaroid formats (white borders) that allow the artist to add additional sketches and notes. There is also a series of smaller canvases that are primarily details from the farm landscape series.

In his artist statement, David says:
"My newest paintings are portraits of four people who have had a measurable effect on my life. Instead of painting literal and accurate portraits (with heads, faces, etc.), I have created images that tell human stories, using symbolism, to create 'personal characterizations'.
"My muse for this series was Jean-Michel Basquiat who used consistently repeated symbols to describe himself.Because I am a right-handed artist, I painted most of the Basquiat series left-handed to give me a new freedom of creative expression.
"My former teacher, 'surrogate mother' and close friend (Franzee Dolbeare) is depicted in a series of paintings that combines images from her own artwork (paintings and fiber art), with writings from her diaries and personal objects (eyewear, china and decorative objects).
"My only brother (Rodney Cooke), who is now deceased, is represented by puzzles. Obsessed in his life by any word game, jigsaw puzzle or puzzle-like game, he continues to challenge me to really know who he was and understand our relationship as brothers.
"The fourth set of portraits is of a close friend (James Rader) who showed me acceptance at a challenging time in my life. Business associate, sportsman and friend, Jim is depicted with symbols from his career, his hobbies, and his faith.
"The canvases presented in this show have allowed me to personally explore and re-connect with these significant people in ways which honor them."

Susanne Dotson's work is based upon "the joy of paint and color, combined with elements and symbols that are juxtaposed to one another. The farm and fashion focus is about combining my rural heritage and my lifelong love of fashion. This unique mix of imagery provides an opportunity to express the humor and the happiness in my art. The "Farm and Fashion Series" collides glamorous jewelry, roosting chickens, high fashion 4-H dresses and designer shoes." "Unconventional Portraits" continues the theme with chickens nesting on boots, and shoes boxed in squares being raised to an iconic state and with the added twist of humor. Susanne, a native of Lagrange, Ohio, majored in fine arts with an emphasis in painting. After graduation from the University of Akron, in 1974, she worked nearly nine years in the commercial interior design business. In 1983, she became a multi-lined manufacturer representative, calling on the commercial interior design and office furniture dealerships in Columbus and northern Ohio.
